Seven die in poorly ventilated mine

Oct. 16, 2012 at 11:25 AM

YONGZHOU, China, Oct. 16 (UPI) -- Poor ventilation is being blamed for the death of seven people in a manganese mine in central China's Hunan Province, local government officials said Tuesday.

The owner of the mine has been detained by police and all mines in the city of Yongzhou have been ordered to suspend operations, the Chinese news agency Xinhua reported.

The accident follows a nationwide work safety inspection campaign conducted in advance of the Communist Party of China's 18th National Congress next month.
