MAIDUGURI, Nigeria, Oct. 16 (UPI) -- At least 10 people are believed to have died following a series of bomb blasts in the northeastern Nigerian city of Maiduguri, residents said.

The residents told the Nigerian newspaper This Day at least 16 blasts occurred, many of them targeting locations used by the joint military task force.

A spokesman for the task force was not immediately available for comment.

Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state, is a stronghold of the Islamist group Boko Haram that wants to create an Islamic state in the mainly Muslim north of Nigeria. Southern Nigeria is mostly Christian.
