The city of Alexandria has seen the sudden fall of several buildings recently. In the El-Gomrok district, the neighborhood of Monday's incident, a building collapsed a month ago, killing nine people, the Egyptian state-run news agency MENA reported, adding failure by local authorities to execute demolition orders and the unauthorized construction of additional floors onto buildings are the primary factors behind the accidents.

The Egyptian newspaper al-Ahram reported an Alexandria building collapsed in July, killing nine, noting building violations and bad maintenance as factors.
