Tibetan protester dies in self-immolation

Oct. 13, 2012 at 1:01 PM   |   Comments

BEIJING, Oct. 13 (UPI) -- A Tibetan man who set himself on fire to protest Chinese rule over his homeland has died, Tibetan rights campaigners say.

Tamdrin Dorjee set himself on fire near the Tsoe monastery in China's north-west Gansu province, the BBC reported Saturday.

An increased military presence was reported to have been deployed around the monastery, the rights campaigners said.

More than 50 ethnic Tibetans have set themselves on fire in similar protests since 2009.

Another Tibetan, Sangay Gyatso, 27, set himself on fire in the same region this month.

The Chinese government blames the Dalai Lama for inciting self-immolation and encouraging separatism.

The Dalai Lama has rejected the allegations, saying the self-immolations are protests against tight Chinese control of the region and religious repression.
