SDEROT, Israel, Oct. 10 (UPI) -- A rocket was fired from Gaza at southern Israel early Wednesday, hours after the Israeli air force hit suspected militant sites in Gaza, the army said.

The Qassam rocket exploded in an open area in the Eshkol region. No damage or injuries were reported, the army said.

Late Tuesday, militants in Gaza fired two Grad rockets at southern Israel, one exploded near the town of Sderot and another near the town of Netivot. No injuries or damage were reported.

The late-night rocket attacks prompted Israel to conduct an airstrike targeting suspected militants' tunnels in the northern Gaza Strip.

The Palestinian news agency Ma'an said several homes in the district of Beit Lahiya were damaged in the airstrike but no injuries reported.

The army said since Tuesday about seven rockets were fired at southern Israel.

The recent escalation came after Israel targeted two Global Jihad operatives in Rafah on Sunday, prompting Hamas and Islamic Jihad operatives in Gaza to fire about 50 rockets at southern Israel.
