Egypt, Turkey in Mediterranean war drill

CAIRO, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- A joint military exercise involving the naval forces of Egypt and Turkey is under way in the Mediterranean Sea, an Egyptian military official says.

Five Egyptian vessels and aircraft are taking part in the drill, said the official, who asked not to be named, the MENA news agency reported Tuesday.

The drill, named "The Sea of Friendship," began Sunday, the official said.

Turkey was one of the first countries to support Egypt's revolution when it began in January 2011.

Egypt will join with the United States in the "Bright Star" military exercise in 2013, the official said. The biannual drill was canceled in 2011 because of political turmoil in North Africa.

In 2009, troops from Turkey and four Middle Eastern countries participated in Bright Star.
