Father fined in king's grandson shooting

SORIA, Spain, Oct. 8 (UPI) -- The father of a teenage grandson of Spain's King Juan Carlos was fined for negligence two years after the boy shot himself in the foot, authorities said.

The exact amount of the fine Jamie de Marichalar -- ex-husband of Elena, the king's daughter -- must pay was not reported. Sources from an anti-shooting organization told ThinkSpain the fine could be as low as $194, though in other similar cases fines started at $777.

Felipe Juan Froilan, now 14, was 12 years old when he shot himself. He had been playing with a gun at Marichalar's family estate in Soria when he accidentally pulled the trigger, investigators said.

Marichalar was fined because Spanish law prohibits children from handling guns, ThinkSpain reported.
