Palestine cultural activist freed

BETHLEHEM, West Bank, Oct. 2 (UPI) -- Zakaria Zubeidi, a Palestinian militant turned cultural activist, has been released on bail after four months of detention by the Palestinian Authority.

Zubeidi was formally charged Sunday with being involved in a shooting at the home of the Jenin governor in May, Maan news service reported. His lawyer, Farid Hawash, said that allowed bail to be set and Zubeidi was released Monday after posting 5,000 Jordanian dinars ($7,060).

The governor, Qaddura Musa, died of a heart attack a few hours after the shooting.

A hearing is scheduled for Oct. 7.

Zubeidi was a leader in the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades. In 2006, he helped found the Freedom Theater in the Jenin refugee camp.
