MALMO, Sweden, Oct. 1 (UPI) -- A Swedish couple is irate at learning a 15-year-old was allowed to participate in the birth of their child.

The teen, who was related to the surgeon performing a C-section delivery, was at one point allowed to use a scalpel and examine the woman's vagina during the procedure, the Swedish website Local.se reported.

The couple first learned of the controversy in May by reading about it in local newspapers but didn't believe it was them until the surgeon called and told them what had happened. They recalled being introduced to the teen, who the doctor described as "an assistant."

Officials at the Malmo hospital described the incident as "regrettable," the website reported.

The delivery went off without complications and mother and child are healthy, the father said.
