Mubarak appeal hearing scheduled

CAIRO, Oct. 1 (UPI) -- An Egyptian appeals court set a hearing for former President Hosni Mubarak and former Interior Minister Habib al-Adly, both of whom are serving life sentences.

Mubarak and al-Adly were convicted in June of failing to prevent the killing of protesters in January 2011 during the massive demonstrations that helped bring down the government.

The Court of Cassation has scheduled their appeal hearing for Dec. 23, Egypt Independent reported Sunday.

Prosecution lawyers have also challenged the acquittal of six former security guards in the same case and the expiration of corruption charges against Mubarak, his two sons and businessman Hussein Salem, the Independent reported.
