Hospitals no sanctuary from Syria fighting

DAMASCUS, Syria, Sept. 30 (UPI) -- Syrian rebels say at least 143 people were killed Sunday in violence between government troops and rebel fighters.

The opposition Local Coordination Committees of Syria said about half of the deaths occurred in and around Damascus, CNN reported. The LCC said 30 bodies were found in a Damascus basement and eight people were killed at a military hospital.

The state-run Syrian Arab News Agency said anti-government forces killed more than 17 people and kidnapped others in the village of al-Haidariaya in Homs province.

CNN said state media also reported fighting in Aleppo near a retirement home and a local athletics institute.

Turkey's foreign minister has chastised the international community for its so-far ineffective effort to stop the bloody rebellion in neighboring Syria.

"What has the international community done to stop this carnage?" Ahmet Davutoglu asked reporters Friday at the United Nations. "Literally nothing. We have yet to see a single effective action to save innocent lives."
