OTTAWA, Sept. 28 (UPI) -- A single-engine plane crashed into a fence at the end of a runway in Ottawa Friday but the pilot unhurt, a fire department spokesman said.

The crash occurred during takeoff on the east runway of Rockcliffe Airport, a former military airport north of Ottawa, and the unnamed woman piloting the plane escaped safely, fire department spokesman Marc Messier said.

Firefighters removed a small amount of fuel spilled on the runway, he said.

The plane, which remained upright, sustained wing damage, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported Friday.
