Students protest Cairo university fee hike

CAIRO, Sept. 21 (UPI) -- Students at the American University in Cairo have blocked the gates to their campus for two days to protest a 7 percent tuition increase.

The first blockade occurred Sunday and the second Thursday, Egypt Independent reported. After Thursday's action, the university administration met with student leaders in an effort to resolve the dispute.

The university agreed to cap tuition for students who are already enrolled.

More talks were scheduled for Saturday.

"Agreement on the tuition cap is an achievement for the movement, but students still think the university could give more, because of the long wait and the negligent strategy that the administration has been following," Aly Osman, a student union leader, said after the meeting.

Some students were suspended after Sunday's protest but have been allowed to remain in class until the disciplinary committee makes a final decision.
