Denmark to reconsider transgender refugee

COPENHAGEN, Denmark, Sept. 20 (UPI) -- The Danish government says it will reconsider an application for asylum from a transgender Guatemalan woman.

Fernandina Milan, who says she will be killed if she returns to her homeland, was scheduled for deportation next Monday, The Copenhagen Post reported. Flygtningenaevnet, the Danish panel that considers asylum applications, decided to revisit her case after Soren Lauersen of LGBT Denmark sent the board documentation of the situation in Guatemala.

Milan worked for Oasis, an advocacy group, in Guatemala. She said she left the country after a police officer put a gun to her head and told her she would be killed if she continued the work.

"The thing I was most afraid of was that I would be killed if I was sent back to Guatemala," Milan said in an interview with the newspaper Politiken. "I was fearful that I would be attacked and tortured."
