One of the officers was pronounced dead at the scene while the other died later at a hospital. Their names have not been released.

Home Secretary Theresa May called the incident deeply shocking and "a terrible reminder of the risks that police officers face every day to keep our communities safe."

A witnesse told the BBC they heard 13 gunshots and an explosion.

Shortly after the incident, Dale Cregan, 29, turned himself in at a police station in Tameside, a statement issued by police said.

Cregan had been the subject of a nationwide search in connection with the slaying of a father and son at a pub in Droylsden in May.

He is now being held on suspicion of the slaying of a police officer as well as the pub killings.
