HAKKARI, Turkey, Sept. 16 (UPI) -- Eight policemen and four Turkish soldiers were killed when their vehicles passed near explosives allegedly planted by the PKK, Dogan news agency reported.

The deaths were caused by two separate blasts.

Eight policemen were killed and seven others injured in a blast in the eastern province of Bingol's Karliova district. The mine was detonated remotely as the police bus passed through the area, Dogan news agency reported.

Four Turkish soldiers were killed and five others injured in an attack on a military convoy Saturday near Hakkari village. Armored vehicles and helicopters were sent to the area immediately following the attack.

Officials suspect the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, to be behind the mines.
