CAIRO, Sept. 15 (UPI) -- Human rights activists called on Egypt to arrest the president of Sudan on war crimes and genocide charges when he arrives for an official visit Sunday.

Amnesty International said Friday the Egyptian government was obligated to detain President Omar al-Bashir when he visits Cairo for meetings with Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi and other top officials.

"In his first address, President Morsi said that Egypt's values and identity would uphold humanitarian values, especially in freedom and human rights," Amnesty International official Marek Marczynski said. "How can he now shake hands with a man wanted for genocide?"

Bashir has been charged in the International Criminal Court with genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity stemming from Sudan's campaign in Darfur.

Cairo stated last year it was not inclined to arrest Bashir on the ICC's behalf, the Egypt Independent said.

Bashir has visited Egypt twice in recent years while facing ICC charges without being detained.
