Police in Rio hunt killers of 6 youths

RIO DE JANEIRO, Sept. 11 (UPI) -- Scores of police officers in Rio de Janeiro were searching Tuesday for the killers of six young people who had been abducted and tortured, authorities said.

The search was being conducted in Chatuba in Mosque, the community where the victims are believed to have been killed by drug lords Saturday, the Rio de Janeiro newspaper O Globo reported.

The victims' bodies were found Monday, dumped near a road and showing signs of torture.

At least two other killings also were reported, the newspaper said.

Authorities Tuesday arrested at least 10 people, including two minors, and confiscated weapons, drugs and cash, the report said.

Police were also looking for a young man who has been missing since Saturday. The missing man's father said he believed his son was being targeted for revenge by a former friend who had become involved in drug trafficking.

Police issued a statement saying the search operation Tuesday was in response to "the significant amount of barbaric crimes committed during last weekend by traffickers."
