Bus crash kills dozens in India

NEW DELHI, Sept. 10 (UPI) -- A state-operated bus carrying pilgrims fell into a deep ravine Monday evening in northern India with dozens feared dead, authorities said.

The Press Trust of India news agency, citing authorities, said up to 35 people may have died in the vehicular disaster in Himachal Pradesh state.

The report said about 40 passengers were aboard the bus, which skidded off the road while traveling to Ashapuri temple in the hilly state and fell into a 3,000-foot ravine in the state's Kangra district, PTI reported.

The fate of the other passengers was not immediately known as rescue efforts were hampered by darkness and the rough terrain made more slippery by heavy rains, authorities said.
