Al-Qaida leader killed in Yemen

SANA'A, Yemen, Sept. 10 (UPI) -- Said al-Shihri, second in command of al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, has been killed, the Yemeni Defense Ministry reported Monday.

A statement from the military command said Shihri was killed during an operation in the Hadramawt Valley with "six other terrorists who were with him."

Shihri was held by Guantanamo Bay by the United States but was transferred to Saudi custody in 2007 and underwent a program designed to lead people away from terrorism but left for Yemen and assumed a ranking position in al-Qaida, CNN reported Monday.

In April White house terrorism adviser John Brennan referred to al-Qaida's Arabian Peninsula operation as "very, very dangerous" and "the most active operational franchise" of the terrorist group.
