Egypt: Terrorists killed in Sinai

CAIRO, Sept. 8 (UPI) -- Operation Eagle has uncovered 31 tunnels between Gaza and the Sinai and killed 32 suspected terrorists, Egyptian military officials said Saturday.

The operation was launched in early August after 16 Egyptian soldiers were killed in a terrorist attack, Ahram Online reported. Col. Ahmed Mohamed Ali, a military spokesman, said at a news conference that 38 people have been arrested but 20 of them have been released.

The treaty, signed by the Egyptian and Israeli governments, limits the number of troops Egypt may keep in the Sinai. Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak says his government expects Egypt to pull its forces out of the Sinai once Operation Eagle is complete, but Ali disagreed.

"The deployment of the armed forces, on all the territory of Sinai, is not a violation of the peace treaty between Egypt and Israel," he said.
