WINNIPEG, Manitoba, Sept. 7 (UPI) -- Winnipeg, Canada, taxi companies have threatened to halt downtown service if they cannot meet with police concerning parking issues, they said.
Drivers for the two largest taxi operators in the Manitoba city, Unicity Taxi and Duffy's Taxis, claim they are harassed by police officers when forced to double-park or stop in restricted areas when dropping off customers downtown, CBC News reported Friday.
Gurmail Mangat, president of Unicity, said he has been unable to schedule meetings with Police Chief Keith McCaskill and Mayor Sam Katz, and added if a meeting cannot be arranged Friday, taxis will refuse fares to and from downtown clubs and bars beginning Friday evening.
