Turkish woman says she killed her rapist

ANKARA, Turkey, Sept. 6 (UPI) -- A Turkish woman charged with killing a relative and decapitating the body says the man raped her and made her pregnant.

Nevin Yildirim, 26, is being held on a murder charge, CNN reported. She said she shot Nurettin Gider as he climbed a back wall into her house on Aug. 28.

Witnesses said Yildirim carried Gider's head into the square in the small village where she lives in southwest Turkey and spoke to men sitting in the coffee shop: "Don't talk behind my back, don't play with my honor. Here is the head of the man who played with my honor."

Yildirim said Gider, who is married to her husband's aunt, began sexually assaulting her in January after her husband left to work in a town nearby. She said Gider threatened her with a gun and said he would kill her two young children.

A source told CNN that Yildirim told her lawyer she felt like she had no choice, although she now regrets the killing: "I thought of reporting him to military police and to the district attorney, but this was going to mark me as a scorned woman. Since I was going to get a bad reputation I decided to clean my honor and acted on killing him. I thought of suicide a lot but couldn't do it."

Yildirim is about five months pregnant. Authorities are trying to determine if she can have an abortion, normally allowed in Turkey only in the first 14 weeks of pregnancy, CNN said.
