Israel pays over man left on road to die

JERUSALEM, Sept. 6 (UPI) -- Israel has agreed to settle with the family of a Palestinian who died after police left him on a roadside even though he was seriously injured from an accident.

The family of Omar Abu Jariban will receive $217,250 to settle the lawsuit they filed after his 2008 death, Haaretz reported Thursday.

Jariban had illegally entered Israel from Gaza and was seriously injured when a car he stole rolled over on the highway, the Tel Aviv newspaper said.

Taken to a hospital, he was treated for broken bones and neurological injuries but released still wearing a catheter and in a state of confusion.

Police, unable to find space for him in a prison, left him at the side a road, where he was found dead of dehydration two days later.

The two police officers who abandoned him were convicted of negligence in his death in June and sentenced to 30 months in prison.
