Couple who shot at burglars cleared

MELTON MOWBRAY, England, Sept. 6 (UPI) -- No charges will be filed against a couple who fired at suspected burglars at their farm in central England, prosecutors said Wednesday.

Andy and Tracy Ferrie were arrested Sunday on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm. They were questioned for two days before being released on bail Tuesday, The Daily Telegraph reported.

"I am satisfied that this is a case where householders, faced with intruders in frightening circumstances, acted in reasonable self-defense," Judith Walker, chief prosecutor for the East Midlands, said. We have therefore advised Leicestershire Police that Mr. and Mrs. Ferrie should be released from their bail as they will not face any charges over what happened."

The couple's farm in Welby near Melton Mowbray had been targeted by thieves before. They told investigators they woke early Sunday to find several masked intruders in their bedroom and opened fire.

Daniel Mansell, 33, who was shot in the hand, pleaded guilty Wednesday to burglary. He said he had gotten a tip that the Ferries were growing marijuana and had large amounts of cash in their house.

Investigators say there is no evidence Mansell's tip was a good one.

The Ferries said they are planning to move to Australia and feared their legal problems might delay them.
