COPENHAGEN, Denmark, Sept. 4 (UPI) -- Denmark's health minister said it is time to offer heroin addicts the choice of receiving their drug in pill form.
Astrid Krag cited a new report from the government health authority indicating heroin in tablet form lessens the risk of incorrect dosages, injuries and incidences of cancer, The Copenhagen Post reported Monday.
Denmark's current system of providing heroin and clean needles to addicts was adopted in 2008.
"This is an improvement in the current system," she said. "It clearly needs to be in place by 2013."
A spokesperson for the Liberal Party of Denmark said the party isn't opposed to the plan.
"We are completely open to the proposal, assuming, of course, that the health minister tells us where she is going to find the money," said Sophie Lohnde.
