Report: Bomb kills 15 in Damascus

DAMASCUS, Syria, Sept. 2 (UPI) -- Syrian rebels said a powerful car bomb they planted Sunday in central Damascus near army headquarters killed at least 15 people.

The state-run Syrian Arab News Agency acknowledged the attack, but gave few details, al-Bawaba reported.

SANA also alleged rebels had killed 15 people with a car bomb Saturday night in a Damascus suburb that houses a Palestinian refugee camp.

Rebels said at least 162 people were killed in Saturday, 55 in and around Damascus, CNN reported.

The United Nations' child advocacy division, UNICEF, issued a report Saturday saying last week was the bloodiest in the 18-month-old uprising, with at least 1,600 people killed in fighting between President President Bashar Assad's forces and anti-government rebels.

The Center of Documentation of Violation in Syria said August's death toll was 4,937.

Meanwhile, rebels told the Los Angeles Times they had staged three attacks on government military airports in the past week, and captured one.

"When you can't hit the airplanes when they are flying, you will make sure they can't take off," said a rebel representative in Idlib province. "There are not enough anti-aircraft weapons and missiles, so targeting air bases ... is a natural choice."

The Assad government hasn't acknowledged the alleged airport attacks, the Times said.

Official statements routinely refer to the rebels as terrorists or foreign terrorists.
