ST-LOUIS-DE-BLANDFORD, Quebec, Sept. 2 (UPI) -- Thieves in Quebec stole about $30 million worth of maple syrup from a storage facility owned by the Federation of Quebec Maple Syrup Producers, officials said.

The theft was noticed during an inventory check at the federation's warehouse in St-Louis-de-Blandford, about 100 miles northeast of Montreal, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported Friday.

"The St-Louis-de-Blandford warehouse had been secured by a fence and locks, and visited regularly," federation president Serge Beaulieu said in release.

The federation said officials are working to determine exactly how much syrup was stolen from the warehouse, adding that it was being held at the warehouse temporarily while a new storage facility in nearby Laurierville was being finished. The syrup was supposed to be moved within the next few weeks.

The stock of syrup was insured, so the federation's members will not lose financially.
