1 reported dead in Philippines quake

MANILA, Philippines, Sept. 1 (UPI) -- Officials say at least one person was killed but little property damage was reported after a 7.6-magnitude earthquake that shook parts of the Philippines.

A woman from southern Cagayan de Oro City died when she was caught in a landslide caused by the Friday quake, China's official Xinhua news agency reported. Some roads, bridges and buildings appeared to have cracks on them after the quake.

"It's good that the damage was not severe or huge," deputy presidential spokeswoman Abigail Valte said Saturday.

Villagers returned to their homes Saturday after a tsunami alert was lifted, Voice of America reported.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued warnings Friday for the Philippines, Indonesia, Japan, Taiwan and Palau, but canceled all of them, as only small waves were generate by the earthquake.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake's epicenter was to the east of the Philippines, about 59 miles from the town of Sulangan.
