Italy battles wildfires

Aug. 31, 2012 at 1:09 PM

ROME, Aug. 31 (UPI) -- Firefighters in Italy, dealing with a seasonal phenomenon of wildfires, reported 65 current wildfires across the country.

The Calabria region, in southern Italy, is the hardest hit, with 22 wildfires. Lazio has 11, Campania, 10, and Liguria, four, the Italian news agency ANSA reported Friday.

There were no reports of injuries or damage, but the State Forestry Corps said it had received numerous reports of fires started due to what the news agency called "negligence."
