PESHAWAR, Pakistan, Aug. 29 (UPI) -- Militants stormed a Pakistani military checkpoint in South Waziristan Wednesday, killing at least eight soldiers and injuring six others, the army said.

A senior security official in Peshawar told Pakistan's Geo News that the militants were armed with rockets and grenades.

Eighteen militants were reported killed when the army returned fire.

A search was under way for any militants who escaped.
