The teenager told the Jerusalem Magistrate Court: "Yes, I was there. He insulted my mom. So I caught him and beat him. I hit him and I hope he gets it again. I hope he dies. You can't go by Damascus Gate without getting stabbed. So why do they come here? I beat him and I'd beat him again."
The Jerusalem Post reported police said the teen was the first to begin hitting the Arab teen, Jamal Julani, who was almost beaten to death. Police said the victim had a heart defect, which could have worsened the beating.
The 15-year-old suspect said he was one of "40-50 kids who all beat" the Arab youth, Ynetnews.com reported.
Police said they had detained or remanded nine youths and were expecting to make additional arrests, the Post said.
The attack took place shortly after midnight Thursday night in Zion Square, Haaretz reported. Police said they believe a teenage Jewish girl incited the attack by recounting her alleged rape by an Arab several weeks earlier, the newspaper said.
The Post said Julani was hospitalized and put on a respirator.
