Ship carrying 3 tons of cocaine seized

MADRID, Aug. 17 (UPI) -- Spanish police Friday seized a ship carrying 3 tons of cocaine to Europe from South America, officials said.

The ship was spotted overnight by specially equipped planes from Italy, Italy's ANSA news agency reported.

In a joint Italian-Spanish operation, Spanish police seized the vessel off Portugal and took it to Cadiz.

Police said the drug trafficking operation was based out of Madrid and involved 31 people, including the 21 members of the ship's crew and a Spanish police officer.
