Alleged Kenyan terrorist's trial resumes

MOMBASA, Kenya, Aug. 15 (UPI) -- The trial of Jermaine Grant, a British citizen accused of planning a terrorist attack in Kenya, will resume in Mombasa Wednesday, court officials said.

Police believe Grant, a Muslim convert who is in jail for entering Kenya illegally, allegedly has links to the Somali Islamist group al-Shabaab, which they believe is responsible for terrorist attacks in Kenya. The drawn-out trial in the country's notoriously slow legal process has been adjourned several times for misplaced papers and delayed presentation of evidence, the British newspaper The Guardian reported Wednesday.

The case has drawn attention in Britain for the role of foreigners in al-Shabaab. Of the estimated 200 foreign fighters in the ranks of the Somali rebels, about 50 are believed to be British, intelligence agents say.
