Man said fit for trial in honeymoon murder

CAPE TOWN, South Africa, Aug. 13 (UPI) -- A South African judge has cleared the way for the trial of a man accused of killing a woman on her honeymoon in 2010 after ruling the man was medically fit.

The alleged hit man, Xolile Mngeni, is in poor health after treatment for a malignant brain tumor, The Guardian newspaper reported.

Judge Robert Henney said Monday Mngeni was fit to begin trial on Wednesday after reviewing a medical report.

Mngeni, 25, is charged as an accomplice to the murder of Anni Dewani, 28, who died after being shot in the neck during a carjacking in Gugulethu township in November 2010.

She was on honeymoon with her husband, Shrien Dewani.

Two other men have already pleaded guilty to the kidnap and murder plot and agreed to testify for the prosecution. They allege Shrien Dewani hired them to kill his wife, a Swedish national.

Dewani is fighting extradition from Britain.
