Arab League calls emergency meeting

JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia, Aug. 11 (UPI) -- The Arab League will hold an emergency meeting in Saudi Arabia Sunday ahead of the Islamic Summit, officials said.

Arab League Deputy Secretary-General Ahmed Ben Helli said Saturday the meeting in Jeddah would be to discuss former Special Envoy to Syria Kofi Annan's successor, al-Masry al-Youm reported.

Nabil al-Araby, head of the Arab League, was to arrive in Saudi Arabia Saturday for the meeting.

On Tuesday, al-Araby will speak at the Islamic Summit in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, on a number of topics, including the Arab League's stance on the situation in Syria and Palestine and the U.N. General Assembly's upcoming meeting.
