Aug. 10, 2012 at 2:30 PM

BLAGOVESHCHENSK, Russia, Aug. 10 (UPI) -- A 12-year-old girl mauled by a bear in a Russian zoo underwent emergency surgery and remains in intensive care, doctors said Friday.

The Asian black bear in a private zoo in Blagoveshchensk, Far Eastern Amur Region, attacked her as she was feeding it a drink from a bottle, Russian news agency RIA Novosti reported Friday.

"The operation, to treat a deep wound in the back of her head, lasted several hours. The girl is now in the intensive care ward where she is in critical condition," said Denis Chernov, one of the attending doctors.

The Blagoveshchensk general prosecutor's office is investigating the incident, the news agency said.
