KRUMOVGRAD, Bulgaria, Aug. 8 (UPI) -- Two wildfires in southwest Bulgaria burned barns and grasslands, and led to evacuations, the Bulgarian Interior Ministry press center said Wednesday.
The first blaze came Wednesday afternoon in the village of Gorna Kula near Krumovgrad, Bulgaria, where a state of emergency was declared and evacuations of the elderly took place. Firefighters from the towns of Krumovgrad and Kardzhali, as well as volunteers, were sent to contain the fire, the Bulgarian news organization Focus Information Agency reported.
The second fire did not reach communities but affected a forest near the village of Babyak, engulfing about 988 acres, the news agency said, adding that about 500 people were involved in fighting the fire.
Gorna Kula and Babyak are about 325 kilometers (202 miles) apart. The cause of either fire was not reported by the interior Ministry.
