China workshop blast kills 13, injures 14

BEIJING, Aug. 5 (UPI) -- An explosion and resulting fire in a family-owned workshop in eastern China killed at least 13 people and injured 14 more, some seriously, authorities said.

Xinhua News Agency reported the Sunday afternoon explosion occurred in a village workshop in Ouhai district in Zhejiang province. A fire resulting from the explosion engulfed a 3,300-square-foot area in the village.

Authorities said the workshop was an illegal facility, involved in polishing and processing hardware locks.

It was not clear how many people were in the workshop at the time of the explosion, which was believed to have been occurred when sparks from a polishing machine ignited dust in the facility, Xinhua reported.

Rescue efforts went on until late in the night.

The news agency said the injured were hospitalized and five of them suffered serious injuries.
