ANKARA, Turkey, Aug. 2 (UPI) -- The Turkish government is working to increase the capacity of its refugee shelters to 100,000 people in response to expected increases in Syrian refugees.

Turkish officials said Wednesday the Turkish government plans to add five additional refugee camps to compensate for the expected increase in refugees from Syria during the Syrian civil war, the Hurriyet Daily News reported.

Turkey currently has eight refugee camps holding 44,000 Syrian refugees. The five additional refugee camps are expected to increase Turkey's refugee capacity to 100,000.

Greek officials said the Greek government reacted to the increase in Syrian refugees by deploying 1,881 additional border guards along the Turkey-Greece border, EUobserver.com reported.

The border guards were moved to the Turkey-Greece border to help prevent refugees from entering the country because Greek officials said the refugees could drain Greece's resources.
