Eight reported dead in Indonesia floods

JAKARTA, Aug. 1 (UPI) -- Eight people are believed dead and another three are missing, Indonesian officials say, after flooding and landslides on a central island of Indonesia.

The deaths were reported in the port city of Ambon in Maluku province, where nearly 1,800 homes were inundated, the Maluku Disaster Mitigation Agency, or BPBD, said, reported The Jakarta Post.

The BPBD reported that about 600 people had been forced to use ropes to evacuate their homes. The BPBD was cooperating with search and rescue teams and other state agencies to evacuate residents.

Monetary losses from the disasters are still being calculated.

The country's weather service predicted several areas will be hit by torrential rains this week, including Central Kalimantan, North Maluku, West Papua and Central Sulawesi.

Tidal waves of 9 1/2 to 16 feet are expected for Maluku and several other parts of the island nation.
