HAVANA, July 24 (UPI) -- Dozens of dissidents were arrested Tuesday on their way to the funeral for Cuban government critic Oswaldo Paya Sardinas, activists said.
CNN, which reported video showed police herding several dissidents onto buses, said government officials did not immediately respond to the U.S. news network's inquiries about the arrests.
Paya, 60, and fellow opposition activist Harold Cepero Escalante died Sunday after their car crashed near La Gavina, Cuba. Spanish politician Angel Carromero, the driver, and Swedish politician Aron Modig survived the crash and were discharged from a hospital Monday.
Cuban government officials said Sunday said witnesses said the car veered out of control on its own and crashed into a tree. Police were investigating the accident, a government statement said.
