Vatican denies investigation claims

ROME, July 23 (UPI) -- The Vatican denies speculation three more staff members are under investigation for leaking confidential church documents, a spokesman said.

Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi said reports in La Repubblica that one of Pope Benedict XVI's housekeepers and two prelates were under investigation are false, ANSA reported Monday.

"Just because people working for the Vatican have been questioned during investigations into the document leaks, does not make them suspects," Lombardi was quoted as saying.

Documents leaked to the media include letters to Pope Benedict XVI and Vatican Secretary of State Tarcisio Bertone that contain allegations of corruption in the management of Vatican City.

The pope's butler, Paolo Gabriele, is under house arrest in the document leaking scandal. Gabriele's lawyer said his client acted alone.
