GUZARA, Afghanistan, July 21 (UPI) -- At least three Afghan police officers were killed in an attack by Taliban militants on a security checkpost in western Afghanistan, authorities said.

At least two Taliban militants were also killed Friday night in the Guzara district of the Herat province, Khaama Press reported.

Provincial security chief Abdul Hamid Hamidi said the clashes began after Taliban militants attacked an Afghan police vehicle.

Meanwhile, the International Security Assistance Force reported a Haqqani network explosives expert was arrested during an operation in the Khost district of Khost province Saturday.

The explosives expert with the Taliban-linked Haqqani network was arrested by an Afghan Special Operations Unit, supported by coalition troops, Khaama Press reported.

A source said the explosives expert constructed and placed improvised-explosive devices used in attacks against Afghan and coalition forces in the region and coordinated transportation and distribution of explosives for insurgents throughout Khost.

The Special Operations Unit also detained several other suspected insurgents, Khaama Press said.

In a separate operation, an Afghan and coalition security force arrested a leader with the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, a militant group, in Ishkamish district, Takhar province, ISAF said.

ISAF said the leader directed attacks throughout Kunduz province. The force also seized several explosive devices, Khaama Press said.

An Afghan and coalition security force also detained several suspected insurgents and seized several weapons, grenades and explosives in Pul-e 'Alam district, Logar province, Khaama Press said.
