English couple get prison for terror plan

MANCHESTER, England, July 21 (UPI) -- An English couple received prison sentences Friday for a plan to blow up a Jewish community center in Manchester.

Mohammed Sajid Khan, 33, who pleaded guilty, was given an indeterminate sentence but must spend at least seven years and six months behind bars, the Manchester Evening News reported. His wife, Shasta, who was convicted Thursday after a trial, got eight years.

Prosecutors said the couple's plan was thwarted when police were called to their home because the Khans were having a fight. Investigators said the couple bought the material for a homemade bomb at local stores.

"You had become, under the influence of your husband, a devoted jihadist motivated by extremist Islamist beliefs," the judge told Shasta Khan. "Underlying your conversion was a desire to support your husband right or wrong and to keep your third marriage together."
