KATO KASTRITI, Greece, July 18 (UPI) -- Officials in western Greece began evacuating villages threatened by an advancing wildfire that began early Wednesday, authorities said.

Fire officials said the village of Kato Kastriti was evacuated and the blaze was moving toward Platani, threatening other communities, ekathimerini.com reported.

Smoke from the fire also was causing problems at a nearby hospital, officials said.

More than 70 firefighters and five water-carrying airplanes were battling the blaze.
