JOS, Nigeria, July 18 (UPI) -- A rocket attack and gunfire in Jos, Nigeria, killed at least nine people, including a 10-year-old boy, officials said.

The school's principal said the attacker aimed a rocket-propelled grenade at Jos Nura Islamic School Tuesday but missed his target and struck a nearby house, Leadership Newspapers reported. The impact of the explosion collapsed a portion of a wall that fell on the boy who was taking an exam with other students, some of whom were injured.

Bala Baba Mohamed, secretary of the elders committee, told the Daily Trust two adults were found dead near the school soon after the RPG incident.

"One [had] bullet wounds and the other was hacked by a sharp object," he said.

Police told Leadership Newspapers that armed attackers also stormed a house, killing a widow and her three children.

Also Tuesday, officials said three people were found dead at a market in the Rayfield area of Jos.

Security officials said they received reports of two rocket launchers being fired Tuesday night, but no casualties were reported.
