DOBILE, Ghana, July 16 (UPI) -- Two American Peace Corps members are being questioned by police in Ghana in the stabbing death of a man who attempted to rob them, officials said.

The incident happened when the two, Andrew Kristler and Rachel Ricardi, were walking home from a night club in Dobile, a suburb of Wa in the Upper West region, early Sunday, Joy Radio Online, Accra, Ghana, reported.

Kristler and Ricardi were confronted by two robbers brandishing machetes who threatened to harm them if they did not hand over all of their possessions, Police Commander Kofi Danso Addae Acheampong said.

One of the robbers went after Ricardi, who was hiding behind Kristler, and a struggle ensued. Kristler ended up fatally stabbing one of the robbers, Acheampong said. The other robber cut Kristler before fleeing the scene. Kristler was not seriously injured.

The dead man was identified as Najas Illias, also known as Ninja, whom the police said terrorized people around Wa Kejetia. His accomplice had yet to be identified.
