COBDEN, Ontario, July 13 (UPI) -- Volunteers responding to Internet appeals showed up to help a family in a "disaster situation" -- saving crops on a drought-stricken farm in Ontario.

The drought forced Kylah Dobson and her husband to increase the size of an irrigation pond on their 197-acre farm in Cobden, leaving little time to pull weeds, which are spreading in their fields,CBC News reported Thursday.

"It's not a good situation right now," Kylah Dobson said. "It's an emergency situation, it's a disaster situation."

The family logged onto Facebook and Twitter to ask for help.

Andrea Hughes was among volunteers to show up at the farm Thursday and more volunteers are expected over the weekend.

"A friend of mine put out the 911 on Facebook that this farm needed help because of the drought," Hughes said. "And I changed my schedule, and I thought that's something I can do to help."
