The Palestinian news agency Ma'an said Mahmoud al-Haiji a member of Hamas' military wing, was killed and another Palestinian injured in the attack.

Separately, a tank fired a shell at a vehicle shortly after those inside attempted to fire an anti-tank missile at soldiers on routine patrol near the Gaza border fence early Thursday, the army said.

Ma'an said three Palestinians were injured, one critically, when the car in which they were traveling suffered a direct hit in Sajaya, east of Gaza City.

In an unrelated move, the army deployed an Iron Dome missile defense battery on the outskirts of the southern Israeli city of Eilat for the first time Wednesday. The army said the deployment was part of routine defense preparations and not due to any imminent threat.

A statement released by the army said the Iron Dome battery is deployed in different areas periodically to test operational capability.
